Cape Town Stadium Cost Report Still Under Wraps

The cost of the Cape Town Stadium (previously known as the Green Point Stadium) which exceeded its budget by a massive 175% is clearly proving to be an embarrassment to the city council.

The stadium was handed over in December 2009, but ProjectPro could not obtain a copy of the final cost report, notwithstanding many emails and telephone calls to the relevant authorities and invoking the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA). Our application was refused in early 2011 on the grounds that the project team is still in the process of collecting outstanding invoices from contractors and professional claims.

The latest communication from the council’s legal department informs ProjectPro that “The draft 2010 WC Close-Out Report was submitted to the Executive Management Team (EMT) meeting on 20 June when it was agreed it that it should be submitted to a the Strategic Mayoral/EMT meeting scheduled for 3 August 2011 to obtain guidance on the publication and dissemination of the report”. Injaka Bridge Collapse

Professional engineers and the general public expressed confusion and outrage when the finding of the inquest into the Injaka Bridge Collapse was announced on 13 November 2006. Over eight years has elapsed since the collapse that killed 14 people in July 1998.
The inquest magistrate Ms J E Serfontein surprisingly found that "none of the deaths were brought about by any act or omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offence on the part of any person. Who is accountable for project product success?

Who is accountable for project product success? The project manager (PM) or someone else? Clearly the PM is accountable for project management success i.e. completing the project objectives on time, on budget and to the required quality. The customer is happy with the product and has accepted it. But who is accountable if the product fails miserably in the operations life cycle? A good (bad?) example is the Millennium Dome in London. It turned out to be a white elephant.
